Great, great cheap headphones.

As you can see by my numbering, the bass is huge here. This driver, which is found in some of the other Koss headphones, can really move in and out far. This is intentional because it splashes bass all over the sound. They did this because it is a portable headphone, so it is obviously going to be used with... iPods, and other mp3 players that don't have a lot of output power and therefore, lack bass.

These will certainly impress your non-hi-fi friends, cause they probably have never heard headphones with this much bass, but for some, it is too much. and I warn you, don't listen to these when you have a headache.

The middle frequencies are there, but harder to notice, the highs are similar. Again, this headphone is less interested in those frequencies.

I really l like these headphones, especially if your source can be equalized (to tame the bass a bit), especially for the price. These, like the grado sr-60s and the sennheiser px100, are the type of headphones that can get the average listener into the world of quality headphones. They are in between the crap out there and the good stuff.

The Koss Porta Pro is a decent, moderately priced portable headphone. Its sound quality does not compare favorably to headphones that cost slightly more, but it's still way better than what you'd get with a Walkman. The bass is a bit boomy and a bit muddy; the mids are a bit weak and the highs are a bit grainy. The three-position earpad adjuster plus above-the-ear pads make for a fairly comfortable listen, but at some expense of durability.

And although the PortaPro can be driven by a portable MP3 player without an add-on amp, it still sounds moderately better with one.

If you are going to buy the Porta Pro, also check out the Sennheiser PX100. The PX100, in my opinion, sounds slightly better than the Koss Porta Pro at the same price point.

Enormous, kick-in-the-head bass impact and lively presentation makes these absolutely great headphones for running straight off an iPod. The bass isn't great quality, but if you're out and about and isolation isn't a concern, these are terrific. I would NOT use them off a proper hi-fi / amp set-up at home though, no way - that bass just becomes far too unruly. With my iPod though, I love them. Awesomely geeky aesthetics too, if sometimes a little uncomfortable on the very tops of my (admittedly quite large) ears.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of the Portapros is "Bass!" The quintessential basshead cans; unfortunately, quality of bass is not great, tending toward a one-note quality that can be decidedly muddy at times. The Portapro also gets congested quite easily with more complex music, making it impossible to follow any single instrument. Midrange is a bit below average, and highs, while good, tend to lack something I can't quite put my finger on. Soundstage (or "headstage") is the only aspect I find remarkable at this price point -- well above average, and definitely better than the lower end Grados.

The Portapro (and Portapro2, which is no longer sold but is identical in sound) is a terrific bargain at the $20 they sometimes go on sale for, but not quite so hot at the full price of $49.95. They are fun cans with an above average sound quality for portables, but below average in the scheme of things. If they're your first introduction to good sounding cans (beyond what's normally sold free with portable players), you may be floored. Don't stop here though, there's better available.

Portapros improve somewhat with amplification, and some people use them with a 75-ohm adapter which is reputed to clean up the bass. Also, there are several modifications floating around, including cutting holes in the pads. I tried the "hole mod" myself, and while helping tonal balance somewhat, it also produced grado-like ear fatigue, so I went back to the stock unmodded pads.

It's hard to say where Portapros fit in this day and age. Because of their almost complete lack of isolation, there are better portable headphones available. And of course, there are far better non-portable headphones around. I would not recommend the Portapro at its full price, but do grab yourself a pair at $25 or less. I tend to use mine with thinly recorded music, and other stuff which benefits from a fat, bloomy bass. Although they're no competition for the better cans on the market, they do wipe out the freebies sold with portable players. In my opinion, they are also better than the newer Koss cans with titanium drivers, such as the KSC-75 and KTXPRO1s.

The Koss Portapros are great headphones for the person who is just getting started in the headphone world. They are very bassy, which many people may or may not like. The mids seem a tad recessed as well as the highs. They offer no isolation, but are very portable, and can be folded up. These cans work well with all sorts of music and are very fun. AWESOME value for the money. I have owned these cans for almost a year and these are still my favourites for portable usage.

Similar to the Senns PX100. Almost linear but overpowered in the bass... but in a good way. They are a little more confused than the PX100 but also more musical and more natural in the mids-midhighs-highs regions. Very comfortable, very portable but not as the PX100.

The PortaPro is a typical consumer level headphones. The sonics leave much to be desired from an audiophile standpoint. Where they shine is portability due to their light weight, and the fact they're easily driven. They are relatively decent headphones in themselves.

My favorite pair of headphones. Sure they are not as good as my Grado's but they also cost 5 times less. I love them. For this size of headphones I have tested many options an no other pair of similar size can give you such a good sound stage and bass.
I can throw then in my bag never having to worry that they would break, crack or bend.
Best portable/collapsible headphones I ever got to own.

Extreme amount of bass! I don't like this much bass anymore. Sound quality is not as good as should be according to the popularity of these.

I just recently purchased both the PX 100's and the Portapro's in that order. Both are excellent sounding headphones and are easily worth purchasing.I just finished side by side comparisons, plugged into my Klipsch 2.1 Promedias with an Auzentech Prelude sound card. Both have equally good 3D soundstaging. But the Portapro's are more accurrate in sound reproduction.Especially the low end.Kick drums, bass and snare drums, sound awesomely detailed and punchy.I thought the PX 100's had better highs, but when i turned down the bass in the equalizer,(surprisingly)i have to say the portapro's are more realistic. At first i thought the Portapro's for bass and the PX 100's for highs and equaled with mids. But you have to use an equalizer to hear that the Portapro's are amazing sounding cans for the money.I would compare them to the Grado SR60's but not as natural sounding. Now for comfort. The PX 100's,hands down! They are feather light and you can forget that they are on your head.Looks wise?Alot of people say the Portapro's are ugly. But i really like the retro look.Portability? The PX 100's again for their innovative fold up compactness. So i would have to say sound wise the Portapro's are an amazing bargain. But that's just my opinion.
